Childhood spoiled by asthma

Childhood spoiled by asthma

I’ve always loved sports.

Seas and oceans surround France. And you have many rivers and lakes. So, swimming is a must, and most French schools have mandatory lessons.
I remember going to a fantastic leisure park in my early age, where you would find a wave swimming pool (the first in Europe in 1976). But I can’t remember where or when I’ve learned to swim. At some point, I was in an army club, but it didn’t last long.

I remember cycling like mad on my little red bike by the age of 3. And later on getting for long rides with my mates in the county side.

I’ve always been competitive. I remember going downhill like mad on my bike trying to block the speedometer (might have gone up to 50km/h) and was quite lucky not to die. Or be killed; on a sunny day we were riding and saw a 2 CV (an old Citroen car) miles away and decided it won’t catch us. After cycling like mad, we had to give up and let the car overtake us. In a huge disappointment, we’ve decided it would be clever to give the finger to the driver. Unfortunately, he didn’t like it and waited for us further away with a gun pointing at us.

Run, tennis, fencing and skiing

I’m not sure when it started. I had asthma. And it sucks. It was so terrible that one day I ended up in A&E with tubes coming up my nose and mouth. Therefore, running has never been my cup of tea. Instead, I went into fencing, because my brother was doing it, and tennis as I did get a racket from my grandma for my birthday. I didn’t compete in tennis. But we’ve made nearly every fencing tournaments in the Yvelines (French county in the south-west of Paris). I don’t think I won any, but remember getting medals so that I might have done well.

Finally, I was a lucky boy as my grandma had a chalet in the Alpes. I was on a pair of skis as soon as I could walk and on the black Olympic slope by the age of 6. Being confident and fast got me into trouble when one day I didn’t wait for my family and continued on a closed slope. Nordic skiers rescued me but I’ve missed the 101 Dalmatians in the cinema with my cousins that evening.
