Mont Ventoux, done!

Mont Ventoux, done!

Holidays

We were on holidays in the South of France, about 20 adults, and 30 kids, in a large villa, with a few cyclists and triathletes. I’m not sure how the idea came around. Probably a late night after too many drinks. But that was said; we were going to ride the Mont Ventoux, a few kilometers away.

Mt Ventoux

I wasn’t extremely fit. Neither prepared. And on top of that, the only bike I had was my time trial bike, far from being the first choice for a climb! But what was said was said, and on August 20, 2014, we went for it.

The ride started well and everything went smoothly. It was so easy that we were wondering if we were on the right road. We couldn’t figure out why everyone was saying it’s one of the most difficult rides in the Tour de France.

Looking at this website now, it appears we’ve chosen the easiest route.

And then, it all began. Six kilometres from the top. No more trees, no more plants. Just soil and stones. And high gradients. 7% average for 4.5km then 10% average until the top. That was hard. I had the feeling that my bike will just stop and I would have to finish by feet. My friends overtook me. Images were coming back in my head of the Tour de France when climbers just go for it leaving people 10 / 15 minutes behind in just 5 kilometres to go.

But, after fighting hard, I’ve finally made it to the top!
